March 6, 1961 - The New York Metropolitan Baseball Club formally receives a Certificate of Membership from the National League
May 8, 1961 - It is announced that the new team will be called the New York Mets
April 11, 1962 - The Mets play and lose their first game, 11-4 against the Cardinals in St. Louis
April 13, 1962 - The Mets play their first home game at the Polo Grounds, losing to the the Pirates 4-3
April 17, 1964 - The Mets play their first game at Shea Stadium, a 4-3 loss to the Pirates.

October 16, 1969 - The Mets beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 to win their first ever World Championship
January 4, 1980 - The Mets are sold to a group headed by Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon for $21.1 million
October 27, 1986 - The Mets win their second World Series title, defeating the Boston Red Sox in seven games
October 16, 2000 - The Mets clinch their fourth National League pennant, but lose to the Yankees in the first Subway Series since the Giants and Dodgers left
