Advantages and Disadvantages of a Brooklyn Bridge

PROS

Beautiful Bridge- The Brooklyn Bridge would bring prestige to New York. A gorgeous bridge will put New York on the map alongside prominent European cities like Paris and London. It would bring in tourists who want to come to New York to see the amazing things offered. It would prove to the rest of the world that New York gets what New York wants.

Cash-Value of land in Brooklyn- With the newfound ease in commuting into Manhattan, realty in Brooklyn would soar. It would create a huge profit in Brooklyn as the people who previously steered clear of Brooklyn would now be willing to live there.

Convenience for the commuters- The people commuting daily needed a faster, more reliable way to go back and forth between the cities. A bridge was the perfect solution. Furthermore, if a toll was issued to use the bridge, huge profit could be made by the cities.

Bring Unity to New York- Would bring the cities of Manhattan and Brooklyn closer together. Created the first glimpse of consolidation into a Greater New York

Bring Prosperity to Brooklyn- It was thought that if Brooklyn and Manhattan were linked, it would make Brooklyn more important, and bring Brooklyn a lot of economic prosperity.

Unify the whole Country- "It is a notorious fact that there is no other country in the world more in need of good and permanent Bridges than the Unites States of America." This last step would unify all of America, making it possible to travel from California to Brooklyn without touching water. It would create national pride in Americans.

CONS

Thought of as impossible: Given the technology of the time, a bridge massive enough to span the East River was unheard of, and there was a lot of doubt in a successful bridge.

Would have to be the longest bridge ever made- The Brooklyn bridge would have to able to span 2500 ft. from shore to shore and be tall enough for boats to sail under it. Again, this was thought of as impossible.

Harsh Conditions- The strong East River winds and powerful currents were disastrous conditions for a bridge to endure.

Very Expensive to Build- The estimated cost was over 6 million dollars (it eventually wound up costing $15,100,000.00!) The New York Bridge Company and other officials were unsure whether the finances could be replace the expenses.
